Space Empires V Technology Tree
This is one game I like, the only thing I have against it is that the AI isn't that great but modders are making it gradually better. Their game allows pretty much freeform modding like Galciv 2 does but even more.I'm going to explain this game in detail if you have not played it.It has a lot of great ideas and concepts, and there is a lot more to do in this game than in Galciv. There are controllable battles, for one, so there is a large variety of special technologies that aren't just weapons and defenses for combat you can use for ships like there was in Master of Orion games. There are also lots of technologies for manipulating space, like you can build planets and 'ringworlds' and 'dyson spheres' if you get far enough in the game. You can destroy stars, planets, create black holes, nebula, create star systems from nebula.
Which is definately an interesting concept for this type of game.There are lots of customization options for races, and special race specific tech trees you can select for race generation. Like, for example, you can have a organic tech tree that includes regenerating armor and ships, special weapons, and special planet structures that are used for a variety of things. There is also a crystaline tech tree, psychic, temporal, and religious, which all of their own unique abilities.The star systems are nice as well.
Unlike other games like Master of Orion you control the ships inside of the star systems throughout the game and travel to new systems using wormholes, similar to what is used in a few space strategy games or even maybe Babylon 5. You actually travel through the systems, and can form strategies with a variety of equipment that can be used like anti-ship drones, minefields, fighters, ships that can build things like space stations in open space (like on your side of a wormhole).There are lots of types of treaties as well, an EXTREMELY diverse negotiation system is in the game. You can form all kinds of alliances and pacts, there are many different type of non agression treaties, trade treaties, technology sharing treaties, cooperation, immigration and migration (races there is immigration and migration in this game), ban the use of certain types of weapons, etc.There is one thing that always annoyed me as well.
Frogboy, from Galciv 2, says that nobody plays this type of game online and it would be a waste. There is a LARGE community of people who play this game online and games are going on daily. MULTIPLAYER is important in this game and always had since the previous games were Play by Email games. Now it has tcp-ip and others and of course hotseat which is how i play it with my friends.This game does have flaws though so i'd suggest you use a mod if you play it.I'd suggest you try Balance Mod or IRM with the latest version of FQM. Balance mod includes the older version of FQM since they only release a new version of balance mod with each patch. I personally prefer balance mod since its got the best tech tree, in my opinion at least.If you have any questions about this game or need help installing mods, ask. Like I said, the AI is good if you use a mod. The default AI isn't that great but you can mod so much in the game that the mods basically fix the problems with the AI.Its like Rome Total War, you have to play with a mod if you want a decent game, lol. I'd say its AI is no worse than vanilla RTW but the AI in IRM and Balancemod both its on the level with the player.Galciv 2 has a good AI, but thats pretty much it. Some eye candy and visual customization and a good AI. That is a stock game though, the mods make SE5 better than Galciv 2.

They have fixed a memory leak that the game had, so its improved. Its hardly as buggy now since the last patch as of now its pretty much perfect aside from things that IRM and Balance Mod fix like the AI.The modding community for all space empires games is great, there are always new mods and they are continually updated. You can find things like shipsets, for example, custom graphics, total conversions like a star wars or star trek mod, really anything. This one is pretty new though so the two most complete mods are just general balance and general improvement mods like what Rome Total Realism was at first, though they are adding new things.The game is so moddable there is even a newtonian physics mod which is a complete rework of the combat system.

Anything in the game can be changed and only a few things are hardcoded, however the developers work on getting most code available to the modders.Whats cool is that there is a mod, FQM, that makes it generate a more realistic galaxy as well which is something that I enjoy since i've always been interested in space.BTW i like your review and it speaks true to the release game. It wasn't that hard to learn for me but there is just so many things you can do it just seems that way. The tutorial was very good, imo and I learned how to play from that.
The hardest part to learn is research since I didn't know what was the best way to allocate points and what was useful. Using special abilities on ships, like making mine fields, and different strategies like defending warp points took a bit of time to learn as well. The game is complex but its a good kind of complex as everything you are doing is actually interesting unlike on other games. The interface is decent, imo, but it was confusing at first like you said. After you learn the basics of the game and use one of the two main mods its actually a very fun game.
ESPECIALLY if you play multiplayer, people have like 10 player games going and they are VERY fun.One thing is that this game is pretty much made by one guy, getting a couple of others to help with things like graphics. I too love Galactic Civ II and in my experience I liked the single player experience in that game more than SEV. I especially like how the alien races of GC II have real personalities, which is something I felt was a bit missing from SEV. $40 is too steep for it. A new version of balance mod came out that gave the AI a better control of migration. With this mod the game is pretty much perfect now so trying not would be best.The AI now will control migration in a way so that I will try to get immigrants that can breathe atmospheres that the race controlling the planet does not.
Once that race that can breathe there takes over that planet the controlling empire can use the full benefits of the facility space and population as if it was fully habitable. This gives the AI a huge boost since before it really didn't pay attention to this.More facility space = more resources and research = a tougher AI.
