Posted: 23 AprilSo, the Roller Coaster Tycoon series of games always finds a way to get me addicted. Whether it is managing the finer points of your park, or building an exciting roller coaster while trying to keep the G forces low, these games always drag me in (except for RCT world, I mean, Jeez.)Anyway, RCT3 came out more than 15 years ago, but I only recently started playing it. I wouldn't say it is better than its predecessors, but it is definitely a decent game, especially compared to the absolute garbage that came out after it. This being the first 3D entry in the series, it is comprised of those classic low-poly graphics that early 3D games were known for. That style didn't exactly age well, but the game still looks cute in spite of that.Speaking of cute, one thing I think this game does better than its predecessors are the guests.

No longer are all guests photocopies of the same guy with different colored shirts on. Guests can now be male or female, child or adult, and have many different skin colors, outfits and hairstyles. On top of that, guests come to the park in 'groups', as in a family or group of friends, which I find quite neat. They're not constrained to their groups at all times, but they do occasionally regroup to do things together, like a real life group would.If you zoom in on the guests' faces, you can see a big dumb smile when they're happy, and I always found this super charming. No longer being constrained to a handful of sprites for each guest has done wonders to their charm and likability, so much so that I don't even drown them for fun anymore.On the subject of no longer being constrained to sprite-based graphics, another thing I like about this game that couldn't ever be in RCT2 and below is being able to ride the coasters you build.

Basically, you can place the game's camera right in front of the train as it goes through any coaster or track ride. It may be a silly addition, but by God am I addicted to it.With that said, there are also many things I think this game does worse than its predecessors.

For one, the missions never expire, so it is impossible to fail them. I understand that not everyone likes spending hours upon hours making a park just to fail the mission, but not being able to fail scenarios basically means we can fool around indefinitely without being punished for it. Maybe if the game struck some middle ground, giving us a bit of wiggle room while still screwing us over for mucking about, that'd be ideal.Building paths in this game can also be a pain in the neck, because unlike its predecessors, the altitude of the ground does not follow discrete steps, and any microscopic difference in height may make a path not connect. That is just atrocious.Also, the iconic Merry-Go-Round music from the original game is nowhere to be found. This may sound like a really dumb nitpick, but those songs were a staple of the original series, and their absence sticks out like a sore thumb. The absence of the classic wooden roller coaster is also notoriousAll in all, though, I think this game is a quite decent entry in the series. It is not as good as RCT1 and RCT2, but it is by far better than anything this franchise delivered after it.
