So I reinstalled G2 recently and also installed a few basic mods/patches. I also offered someone to make a quick rundown of what to install in which order, and I decided, why not make a post here if I have this written down anyway.

However, I am sure there are better, more comprehensive and complete guides, so if you know of any please link them in the comments! So here we go. Base GameThis guide is for the Steam version of 'Gothic II: Gold Edition', installed on Windows 10 Pro 64bit. I have not tested it on any other windows, but theoretically it should work just as well e.g. On Windows 7.
Also, have a look at. Most of what I desribe here is just following these recommendations. After installation, you can change the language via the Steam interface. If you want to do that, make sure to do it before anything else.
I changed from English to German, and Steam had to download basically the whole game again.).When done, launch the game once into the menu and quit out again. You should now have a clean version 2.6 of Gothic 2 with Add-On installed, and are ready to install the mods. ModsNow it's time to install a few patches/mods that fix a lot of bugs and other issues, and make the game look and run better on newer machines. As a general note, make sure the installers for each mod point towards the G2 install path, which for the Steam version is something like pathtoSteamsteamappscommonGothic II.Gothic2.exe Report Version Download and install the file gothic2fix-2.6.0.0-rev2.exe.This can fix various problems of starting the game, and is needed for some of the following patches.Gothic 2 SystemPack Download and install the file Gothic2PlayerKit-2.8.exe first.Download and install the file G2NoTR-SystemPack-1.8.exe second.Updates and fixes a whole bunch of compatibility issues and bugs. See the source link for a complete list of changes.D3D11 Renderer Download and install the file GD3D11-X171.exe. Only if you have a GPU that supports at least DirectX 11!
To find out if that is the case, hit Win+R to get to the Run prompt, and run dxdiag. Towards the bottom of the page you should see e.g.
'DirectX-Version: DirectX 12'.This completely replaces the redering engine of the game with a modern one that actually uses your GPU, instead of the original one that would mostly use the CPU to render. This was the main source of problems a lot of people had, where the game would run really bad on new systems that should have no problems running the game. With this patch, I get 100fps easily and have no problems. It also features an automatic updater, so when you first run the game after installation it will probably ask to download some missing asset files, and it will regularly check if there are new versions available.EDIT: I've added a newer source link, thanks. However I did not test that myself, so I can't say what exactly you need to do to install that correctly.Unofficial Patch Download and install the file g2addonscriptpatch.2.60.3.exe.This patch fixes a bunch of in-world and story bugs and issues. This seems to be only available in german. I don't know if there would be any problems when installing this on e.g. The english version of the game.
A tileset is a set of graphical tiles used in roguelikes to substitute the regular ASCII graphics, creating a GUI.It works by defining a set graphical tile for every symbol and object in the game. Graphical tilesets are often beneficial to new roguelike players who are not accustomed to the usual graphics-free style roguelikes are presented in. NetHack's DevTeam has created an official tileset. 'Good tileset' is a contradiction in terms. Tilesets are confusing and difficult to interpret. It's not as bad with Nethack as it is with, say, Dwarf Fortress-tilesets on Dwarf Fortress make the game absolutely unplayable-but it's still bad enough to make the game very very difficult to play. The Absurd NetHack Tileset is a tileset for NetHack created by John Shaw. It features large, realistic images of map features. It was once available in 64x64, 72x72, 96x96 and 128x128 sizes. Unfortunately these once-popular tilesets are no longer available at the official web site. The NeXTSTEP tiles is a recreation of a tileset used on a NeXTSTEP system. This tileset can be used with NetHack 3.4.3. The tiles are 10x10 pixels in size. The NeXTSTEP NetHack used one image per monster symbol, so eg. All ants get one image, all blobs get another, and so on. The images have parts which are colored on the fly to make the distinction between different tiles. NetHack 3.6.0 has made some changes to the tileset layout. The default 16x16 tileset for 3.6.0 appears below. You can place the mouse over any tile and a tooltip will describe it. A click will go to a relevant page.

I think there shouldn't though, because as far as I can see from the german description, there doesn't seem to be any dependency on language-specific things. For example, it doesn't seem to add or edit any dialog options, it just (re)enables existing options in certain situations. PlayUnfortunately, after installing these mods (primarily the DX11 mod I think), my game won't start anymore from within Steam. Instead, you need to start it via the 'GothicStarter' which is located under pathtoSteamsteamappscommonGothic IIsystemGothicStarter.exe.And that's it! You should be good to go now. If you have any questions or run into problems you can't fix yourself, feel free to ask and I will do my best to help. Also, you could look towards for more help.Have fun!PS: As a general tip, save often!
There is no autosave or quicksave unfortunately, so you need to go via the menu, but it is worth it. I have had one or two crashes in the past few days.
Also, the game is difficult. IMO even more so than G1.
